2014 Murto Vineyard "Special Reserve" Pinot Noir
This is a special "late release" Pinot Noir to celebrate our 30th harvest! We made our first vineyard designated wine from
Mike and Robin Murto's outstanding old vines (planted in 1978) high in
the Dundee Hills in 1997. In the 2014 vintage, we separated out our 4 favorite barrels from the original blocks at Murto Vineyard for this special reserve bottling. The intention was to release the wine in it's prime drinking window, which based on our experience was 10 to 15 years from vintage. Bottled in the spring of 2016, this wine has been resting peacefully until now.
The
2014 growing season was characterized by warm days and
very warm nights; lows were only in the mid 60s rather than the high 50s
that we generally experience with our maritime climate. Harvest commenced on the 23rd of September and concluded on October
3rd, the earliest start and finish ever! The grapes were vinified with a
small fraction of whole cluster that helped us extend macerations to
18-21 days, and then aged in barrel (50% new French oak) for 18 months.
Enjoy this sophisticated, fully mature Willamette Pinot now and over the next several year. The high elevation site and an early harvest enabled us to maintain freshness and relatively low alcohol levels, producing a very elegant, complex wine in a very warm vintage.
